Skills required before you try.
Good backwind sailing technique (clew first as well!). Practice in low wind conditions with beginner equipment if necessary.
For planing Push Tacks you need good board control while planing and you need to feel comfortable switching your feet while planing. Switch stance sailing can also be practiced on beginner equipment if necessary.
N.B. Almost all the skills required for modern freestyle can be practiced and trained on beginner equipment so get out on the water even if the wind is light.
ENTRY
Start the move like a carving gybe. Bear the board downwind to reduce the pressure in your sail. Start the movement with your head by turning it to look back round to windward.
As your head rotates to look windward, sheet out and bring the mast across the board to windward (IMPORTANT Try to keep the sail neutral) then rotate your body to windward, turn your front foot out of the strap placing it on the windward rail so you can apply toe pressure to carve the board back up towards the wind, at the same time stepping up to the mast foot with your back foot.
(Now you are clew first back winded (but with the sail open to control the power), with your body and feet facing windward)
PUSH
Keep following your mast with your head, which is now pulled down to the back of the board. With your weight on your back foot and while carving the board with your back foot control the power in your sail with your sail hand while pushing the sail with your mast hand. All these things work together to turn the board up through the eye of the wind to bring you to a point where you have tacked.
N.B. (My advice is not to concentrate too much on the board but to keep your vision on the sail(mast),and that will automatically make you carve your board back upwind with toe pressure.
EXIT
Straighten your sail(back) arm(sheet out),bring the mast upright and slide new mast hand close to the mast to shift the sail or stay clew first and go for a clew first spock 540 one handed!!!
Have fun with sailing and smileā¦
